The National Energy Transition Task Force formally launched the new Energy Efficiency and Electrification Working Group (E3WG) on May 28th 2024 as part of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP).

E3WG is led by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) and comprises the International Energy Agency (IEA), Indonesia-Denmark Energy Cooperation (INDODEPP), World Resources Institute (WRI), Pusat Studi Energi (PSE) UGM and Net Zero World Initiative (NZWI).

“Energy Efficiency and Electrification are important areas of energy transition, and we hope this new working group can come up with a list of actionable projects and items for the implementation of JETP,” said Rachmat Kaimuddin, Deputy Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment for the Coordination of Transport and Infrastructure as well as Head of the Implementation Team of the National Energy Transition Task Force.

The new working group joins the existing Technical, Policy, Financing and Just Transition Working Groups in providing technical input to the JETP Secretariat for the second iteration of the Comprehensive Investment and Policy Plan (CIPP Update), slated for release early next year. The working group focuses on the following work streams: Industry, supply side efficiency, buildings and appliances, and transport.

Professor Eniya Listiani, Director General on New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, further delivered a keynote speech, highlighting investment opportunities arising from the issuance of Government Regulation No. 33 Year 2023 on Energy Conservation.

“Energy efficiency is a key strategy for Indonesia to reach net zero in the power sector by 2060. The new regulation mandates energy management for industries of various sub sectors that have passed certain energy consumption thresholds. This creates a market for energy service companies and energy conservation activities that can hopefully contribute to Indonesia’s net zero emissions goal,” Listiani added.

The launch event featured four main discussion sessions focused on Financing, Industry and Supply Side Efficiency, Buildings and Appliances as well as Transport, featuring speakers from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Public Works, and Ministry of Transport. Each panel also featured members of the E3WG working on the relevant work streams, along with speakers from the private sector who provided insights on ongoing energy efficiency implementation as well as future opportunities for energy efficiency in each respective sub-sectors.

Held at the Ayana Midplaza, the event attracted more than 100 participants, including representatives from government, financial institutions, private sector entities, think tanks, and civil society organizations.
